A few weeks ago a kind neighbor delivered at least 100lbs of potatoes and onions in bags to my back yard for my compost. Win-Win, one would think. I wasn't prepare and didn't have enough fill dirt to cover up the mound of decomposing vegetation. As we broke open the red mesh bags and dumped the hundreds of pre-compost gold nuggets onto the hard ground a thought occurred to me, "What now?" So we frantically started to shovel whatever loose dirt we had over the now mini-mountain of many eyed-potatoes and vintage onions.
A week later I noticed a critter that I have not seen more that 10 times since I moved to Arizona 12 years ago. A Fly! A real, black little pesky being. Now, don't get me wrong, every being has a right to life here on Earth. But when it interferes with my peaceful morning cup of java as I watch the sun rise behind the Cottonwood trees in my back yard, something has got to give! And then more came.... hummm what is going on? Lots and lots of flies! Am I on the East Coast? Over the last two weeks the Monsoon rains have graced our land and the ground is moist, soft and fertile. Perfect conditions for compost... well compost that is covered with enough dirt that is it decomposes underground, not above the ground where the flies have come to feast on a hundred pounds of potatoes and onions!
As I sit here writing and observing Nature, I am in conflict. Don't the flies have a right to feast on the decomposing mound? Haven't I drawn them into my life to teach me about little pesky things in my life? What will I do about the little issues? How will I take care of the problems? Will I follow the natural course of things and manifest enough composting material to satisfy the flies and the decomposing of the veges that have graciously produced themselves to provide nutrients for humans and the Earth.
Nature all-ways teaches us how to be better humans. Now it is my time to act. Will I take care of the things that bug me? How will I accomplish that? When will I choose to take charge of myself and my back yard?
A Big Up for Nature, the flies and the 100lbs of potatoes and onions! Win-Win!
